IMPORTANT!

We wanted to let everyone know that the needle exchange vote in Springfield, Massachusetts scheduled for this Monday (May 2nd) has been postponed. Bud Williams, the city councilor pushing the legislation, told us today that the proposal - and the subsequent city ordinance - will not be drafted by this Monday. That said, the Springfield at-large electoral system is so overtly undemocratic and way too messed up to explain here the possible reasons why the vote keeps getting postponed. So let's just leave it at that for now.

In the meantime please:

1. Write to the city councilors listed below in support of a NEX program. Write them all kinds of letters. Be rigorous and forthright. Their heads are made out of straw. Please contact them NOW & let your views be known.

Rosemarie Mazza-Moriarty
95 Osborne Terrace 01104

Angelo Puppolo
44 South Shore Drive 01118
(413) 782-5862

Timothy Rooke
50 Overlook Dr. 01118
(413) 747-1825

Domenic Sarno
109 Carroll Str. 01108
(413) 734-1173

And don't forget the mayor (who is rumored to administer a veto if the NEX bill passes!)

Charlie Ryan
36 Court St. 01103
(413) 787-66100

2. Get ready to come to our action! We will get some hotel rooms in case people want or need to sleep over.

3. Write a letter to the editor of the Springfield Republican.

4. Forward this site to anyone who might be interested.

5. Anything else that you think might put the pressure on.

Bud says he is planning for a May 16th vote, but who knows. We will, however, confirm the date as soon as we know it's a go. We know this makes it more difficult to unleash a well-planned action, but we want to be ready so when the date arrives we can swoop into action. Or in the words of Stokely Carmichael, "let us stay ready so we don't have to get ready."

In solidarity...
Jonny and Herschelle
